Expand Workload Domain Cluster

In this VMware Cloud Foundation 4 demonstration, we illustrate that adding additional hosts to workload domain clusters is a simple process carried out via SDDC Manager.

Starting from the SDDC Manager Dashboard, navigate to the Hosts inventory view to identify hosts that are commissioned, but not in use for any workload domain clusters.

  1. Click [Hosts]
  2. Click [Unassigned Hosts]

In our demonstration environment, there are currently 2 available hosts that are not assigned to any workload domain cluster. If no unassigned hosts are available, then hosts must be imported into the SDDC Manager inventory via the commissioning process. Additionally, vSphere licensing for hosts added during this process should already be added to SDDC Manager.

We will use one of these hosts to expand an existing workload domain cluster, wld01.

  1. Click [Workload Domains]
  2. Click [wld01]

First, we will review the current cluster configuration.

  1. Click [Hosts]

We see that the workload domain contains 4 vSphere hosts, which are all members of the cluster wld01-clus01.

Next, we will proceed to add a host to the wld01-clus01 cluster

  1. Click [Clusters]
  2. Click [wld01-clus01]

From the cluster summary view, we will start the wizard to add a host:

  1. Click [Actions]
  2. Click [Add Host]
  3. Click the [scroll bar] to view available hosts

Multiple hosts may be added to a cluster at a time, but in this example we will elect 1 of the available hosts to add to the workload domain cluster.

  1. Click the [checkbox] beside host esxi-10.vcf.sddc.lab
  2. Click [Next]

Choose a license to assign to the vSphere host.

  1. Click the [dropdown] beside the ‘VMware vSphere’ field
  2. Click the [license] to select it
  3. Click [Next]

On the final screen of the wizard, confirm the details.

  1. Click [Finish] to close the wizard.

SDDC Manager will now begin the process of adding the host to the wld01-clus01 cluster. To monitor the progress, navigate to the Tasks view in SDDC Manager. In our example, it is minimized, so it must be expanded.

  1. Click the double [ ^ ] symbol in the Tasks pane (bottom right)

It may take several minutes for SDDC Manager to add the host to the cluster. In this example, we have accelerated the process.

Note that the task has completed successfully.

  1. Click the [ X ] button at the top right of the Tasks pane to minimize it

Finally, we will review the changes to the cluster.

  1. Click [Hosts]

Note that the host esxi10.vcf.sddc.lab is now listed as a part of the wld01-clus01 cluster.

  1. Click [Clusters]

Note that the host count for the wld01-clus01 cluster has increased from 4 to 5.

We have successfully demonstrated how to expand a workload domain cluster with VMware Cloud Foundation 4.
